How to be a happy homemaker

1| CREATE A HOME YOU LOVE TO LIVE IN.

If home is where you’re spending most of your time, doesn’t it make sense to infuse it with your taste and preferences?

Choose elements like paint, furniture, decor, and other home goods intentionally.

How to be a happy homemaker: create a home you love to live in. Pillow and book next to window.

These things will take some time, but you’ll love spending your days in a home that feels like it’s uniquely yours, rather than someone else’s style.

2| DECLUTTER AND ORGANIZE.

Living in chaos isn’t really living, my friend. A cluttered space makes an even more cluttered mind.

Spend time getting rid of unwanted items, and creating organized spaces for the things you’re keeping.

You will be giving yourself and your family the gift of peace by not owning more stuff than you can manage.

3| BUILD SYSTEMS AND ROUTINES THAT WORK FOR YOU.

If you want a peaceful, well-managed home, you have to create it! Systems are how you make your home work for you (and your family), while a routine is how you make your systems work.

The two go hand in hand to provide structure and organization in your homemaking activities, making them feel more manageable and less overwhelming.

Set aside specific times for tasks such as cleaning, cooking, and laundry, and establish a rhythm that works for you and your family.

4| BE A GOOD STEWARD OF RESOURCES.

Time, money, and talents are all incredible gifts from the Lord. When you learn to manage your resources intentionally, you prevent yourself from becoming a slave to all kinds of things that drain them.

5| EMBRACE COMMUNITY.

It’s essential for homemakers to feel connected. Finding needs to serve in your church and town, and creating community within your home through the practice of hospitality, will help you and others to feel connected.

6| BE DILIGENT ABOUT SELF CARE AND HOBBIES.

Don’t skimp out on taking care of yourself. Things like regular doctor’s appointments and living a healthy life are important. So are haircuts more than once a year, and a new bra when you need one.

Spending time in ways you enjoy, participating in hobbies, and true rest are vital for your well being, too.

Prioritize self-care to ensure that you have the physical, emotional, and spiritual energy to fulfill your homemaking responsibilities. By setting aside time for rest, relaxation, and activities that bring you joy and fulfillment, you’ll look at your homemaking as a WAY to enjoy yourself, rather than a hurdle you have to overcome BEFORE you can enjoy yourself.

7| BOND YOUR FAMILY TOGETHER.

By carving out time for meaningful activities, you will be ensuring that your family’s bonds will grow and deepen. As homemakers, we feel our best when our people are getting along, there’s harmony in our homes, and we have fun together!

8| HOMEMAKE YOUR WAY.

When you know who you are, what you’re good at, and what you hope for, you can release the pressure to try to do things like everyone else.

You’ll find freedom from the heavy weight of comparison!

Homemaking is not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. There are things you’re really good at, or that you find particularly interesting, that others probably don’t. And that’s ok! You get to choose how you spend your time and energy as you care for your home, your people, and yourself.

9| BE A LIFELONG LEARNER.

Homemaking is a space where you can continue growing, learning, and trying out new things, and I hope this is an unshackling reassurance!

We’re all starting in different places, with different skills, desires, and priorities. You don’t have to know how to do everything right now. You don’t even have to want to know how to do everything right now.

Do what you need/want for this season of life, and add more in when you have the capacity.

By continuing to learn and grow, we can assure that we don’t become stagnant. We can continue to feel refreshed, challenged, and productive as we develop.

10| PURSUE GOD ABOVE ALL ELSE.

There will be many things that steal our attention and joy. We will never truly be content or whole in a life apart from God. We must cling to him through everything, including our homemaking.

By keeping God at the center of our homes and hearts through regular bible reading, prayer, and worship, we can drown out some of the unwanted noise and spend our time in ways that honor Him.
