What Are Beeswax Wraps?

I was introduced to beeswax wraps a couple years ago when I saw somebody using a wrap as a lid to brew their own kombucha.

I did a little research and used some birthday money to get my own set of beeswax wraps. My first set was from Amazon and they worked well for quite awhile.

Beeswax wraps are simply plastic free food wraps that you can use to cover and store your food.

They are reusable and quite versatile. I will share some of my favorite ways to use beeswax wraps a little later on.

Beeswax Wrap Benefits

Now that we have talked about what beeswax wraps are, let’s talk about the benefits of using beeswax wraps in our homes.

1| They are a great natural alternative to store food.

The materials used to make beeswax wraps are usually cotton, beeswax, plant resin, and plant oil. Alternative food storage often consists of plastic, foil, and other synthetic materials. Glass is also a great option, but harder to store and can be an added expense.

2| They are easy to clean and care for.

Cleaning beeswax wraps is easier than you might think. All you need is cool water and a little dish soap. It really is that simple.

3|They help save money.

By using reusable food storage options you aren’t buying plastic wrap, foil, and bags to store your food. It’s a one time investment and the wraps typically last for about a year before needing replaced.

4|They are better for the environment.

By using plastic free wraps, there is less trash being put into our garbage and landfills. It’s so important to do what we can to help decrease the amount of trash in the world.

5| They are breathable.

These wraps are breathable. They work great to let your food get some air, but they also don’t seal so tightly that mold quickly begins to grow.

Now that we have covered the 5 beeswax wrap benefits,  let’s take a close look at why these wraps are so practical in the kitchen!

Beeswax Wraps Are A Great Eco Friendly Food Wrap

As I mentioned before, beeswax wraps are a great eco-friendly food wrap. Simply, they are not harmful to the environment.

We recently visited the Museum of Science and Industry with one of our sons. One of my favorite exhibits was The Blue Paradox. It was so powerful as it showed us how the ocean has been hit consistently with plastic garbage.

To sum it up, our convenience of using plastic has made a negative impact on the earth and has become an extremely dangerous pollution problem.

It was such a powerful exhibit and we each signed a pledge to do a better job about using eco-friendly options.

Since leaving the museum I have been more intentional about using my reusable beeswax wraps.

Lastly, these wraps are biodegradable. When you feel they have reached the point of usefulness, you can simply recycle them or add them to your compost.

There is no denying that these beeswax wraps being biodegradable is one of the best benefits of beeswax wraps!

How To Use Beeswax Wraps

Beeswax wraps are simple to use. All you need is the heat from your hands to create a seal around your food.

If you are wrapping fresh food such as onions, avocado, or some bread, all you do is wrap the beeswax wrap around the food you want to cover and squeeze the wrap to help it seal.

The beeswax is pliable and the heat from your body will help it stick to itself and containers.

Some of my favorite things to wrap with beeswax are:

-Homemade bread

-onions

-peppers

-avocados

-bowls of cut up fruit

-lemons

-limes

-to cover my kombucha

Beeswax wraps can be used in multiple areas of the kitchen but are not recommended for raw foods such as meats.

How To Clean Beeswax Wraps

Cleaning beeswax wraps takes little time and energy. All you need is cool water and a drop of dish soap.

Run the beeswax wrap under water with the soap, rinse, and hang to dry.

It’s important to note that we are not using hot water to wash our wraps. The wraps are made with beeswax and should be avoiding heat.

If you haven’t guessed it yet, beeswax wraps are not meant to be used in the dishwasher, microwave, or oven, and should only be hand washed– never put in the washing machine or dryer.

Review of Bee’s Wrap brand

As I mentioned before, I bought my first set of beeswax wraps on Amazon. They worked well for me but it’s time to let them retire.

I recently got another set of wraps by the company Bee’s Wrap and I am very pleased with them.

Upon getting them out of the package I could tell they were made well. In fact, I could smell the beeswax and it smelled so heavenly.

I still had one wrap unused from my first set. It was wrapped up in paper and I took out both brands of beeswax and noticed the Bee’s Wrap wrap was thicker and more durable.

The first place I used my extra-large beeswax wrap was on a loaf of homemade bread. It closed up so nicely keeping it moist, but also allowing it to breathe.

If you can’t tell by now, I recommend these versatile beeswax wraps as a safer alternative to cover and wrap food.

If you are interested in trying these reusable wraps in your home I recommend this company. After purchasing these wraps and using them regularly, I realized the quality of these wraps is stronger than my first set.
