Who is this devotional written for?

Before we get into the devo’s content, you may be wondering what age group it’s best suited for.

This devotional is written for:

  • families with children or grandchildren
  • Sunday schools
  • youth groups
  • outreach

To accommodate the wide range of children that may be participating, our hope is to write devotionals that ANY age can get something out of by not talking down to teenagers while also not speaking too maturely for younger children.

We try to offer additional resources to help reinforce the lesson if parts of the devotional might be a little complex for young minds.

Discussion questions are meant to be simple, and the depth of discussion will vary based on age and maturity. As a general rule, we err on the side of not making the content sound like it’s written for kindergarteners, but hope that it’s short and sweet enough for them to participate!

Day 1: What is the Feast of Tabernacles?

READ: Leviticus 23:41–43

Celebrate this as a festival to the Lord for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate it in the seventh month. Live in temporary shelters for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in such shelters so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.

The Feast of Tabernacles, also called Sukkot or Booths, was one of the most joyful celebrations God gave His people.

Each year, after the harvest was brought in, families packed up and moved out of their houses. They built little shelters out of branches and leaves and spent a whole week living in them.

This might sound a little strange, but God wanted His people to remember something important. Long ago, when the Israelites left Egypt, they lived in tents for forty years while they wandered in the wilderness.

They had no cities or farms, but God took care of them every single day. Living in shelters once a year helped new generations feel what their ancestors felt—and remember that God had provided.

But the Feast wasn’t only about the past. It was also a time to celebrate God’s blessings in the present. Families had just finished bringing in the harvest, and their baskets were full of grain, olives, and grapes.

They gathered to feast, sing, dance, and rejoice, giving thanks to God for all He had given.

Even more, the Feast pointed to the future. The prophets said that one day, all nations would come to celebrate this feast. (We’ll read more about that on Day 4 of this devotional.)

It was a sign that God would dwell with His people forever. When Jesus came to earth, He fulfilled this promise in a new way—He “tabernacled” among us by living right here with us.

So, the Feast of Tabernacles reminds us of the past, the present, and the future. God cared for His people in the wilderness. He provides for us today. And He promises to live with His people forever.

That’s why it is called a feast of great joy!

Discussion

  • Why do you think God wanted His people to celebrate every year?
  • What do you think it would be like to live in a little shelter for a whole week? What would be difficult about it? What would be some benefits?
  • What’s something your family celebrates every year, and why is it important?
  • How could celebrating help us feel closer to God?

Activities

  1. Build a small “sukkah” fort in your living room or backyard.
  2. Together, look up photos of modern sukkahs and notice how people still celebrate this feast today.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving your people a festival to remember your care. Help us this week to learn about the Feast of Tabernacles and see how it points to your love in the past, your blessings today, and your promise for the future. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
